In two games, I had one bingo yet still scored big (494, 456), thanks to a combination of +5s, double doubles, and CSW only words (JIGOT for 42). One game I won thanks to challenging off phony threes. Got to play some new people and some people I hadn't played for a long time. Used a lot more time than I use in OWL games. It feels like it's harder to pick out The Best play, but easier to pick out a pretty darn good play, given the options (though conversely, even sadder when there seem to be no good options). I missed at least three CSW bingos, maybe more, due to not knowing them, but it made me feel a lot less inferior than it does when I miss OWL stuff, since I have lower expectations of myself in word knowledge in this lexicon. Learning new stuff vs reviewing old stuff is also just a lot more fun. I wonder how the curve of happiness with CSW will look - my OWL curve has been pretty wavery since mid 2013, so hopefully CSW will give me another bunch of years of happiness before I start getting apathetic / annoyed.

BAT 15

Share
k8-2
So... I had played maybe two live games since New Orleans. I didn't touch the new words until two weeks ago. And I got bronchitis. Thus, I went into BAT with less than zero expectations. I drew pretty poorly, I bingoed way less than my average... yet my record came out okay. I felt like I was strangely focused, while at the same time really detached from my results. Get beaten by 200? sure, whatever. Win five in a row? sure, whatever. So, maybe I would've been more mad about my results on another weekend, but for what it was, apparently, I'm fine with it. It does feel a little weird to go into a tournament not having played across a real board in so long. I need to find a way to play a little more frequently.

game by game summaryCollapse )

Was it a little frustrating to hit a three-game run of losses and get double-blanked three times in the last four games? Sure, but I'm still pretty happy that it turned out as well as it did. Getting into these new words has renewed my interest in studying a bit. Time to start prepping for NM, and I guess I'll be going to Nationals and playing for a change... may be my last OWL tourney for awhile, as CSW is becoming more appealing...

winnings this year: 1400ish? really no idea

highlights: hosting NOLA and a Princeton tourney; seeing a new city (Asheville); playing and winning my 100th tournament; popping back above 1900 for a minute.

meh: i feel like a jerk when i win my own tournament. i felt badly for the directing team that NYC was so poorly attended.

lowlights: i kind of hated most things about scrabble this year, including studying and the dictionary. i have forgotten all the words. i hope it swings back in a positive direction in 2015.

NYC 2014

k8-2
Hey! It's my 100th tournament and I won it! i was flashcarding threes on the train to NYC because I seriously haven't looked at words since before BAT in May. It caused some entertaining word knowledge errors, but mostly, I went in pretty apathetic about playing, which I guess has been helping me lately. I also got to see three theater pieces this weekend, which kept my mind off of the games a bit, and also kept me from gallivanting late into the night. It would've been nice to see a larger draw for a NYC tournament, and it probably won't run again without a significantly cheaper venue or a promise of better attendance. Sad.

This tournament was streaky: WWWWW LLLL W L WWWW

I hit a big stretch of clunkiness at game 4 and went without blanks for five games, after which everything picked back up. I only botched one game that I know of, not blocking all the out bingos (I blocked the two I saw with two tiles in the bag, emptied the bag, and Joey bingoed out for 90 to win by 20 with one that I didn't see). I played a couple what felt like particularly well, but Quackle may disagree. I cheered for Elouise Pearl, 22nd seed, who got to play at table one. I got extremely lucky in round 14 while my opponent got extremely unlucky and won by 389 with only three bingos, and only got the second blank at the very end. I made a blank a Z just so we could have a three Z game in round two. I missed two triple triples (on the same turn) with AGEMNS? through an E in fourth position. I had six opening bingos (some after trading). I traded on first rack when going first three times (-OI keeping DRAIN, -AEIOO keeping EN, -AAIOO keeping AN). In the last game, the first I didn't come out til 57 tiles into the game, on turn 11. Ultimately, my timing was just right and I snuck into second after not being anywhere near contention for most of the middle of the tournament. I love Vermont - I hope to be back next year!

Okay, so I've had enough of getting sick at tournaments. This version of dysentery isn't as bad as the one at Charlotte in 2012, but bad enough that I'm home today, lying on the couch and watching Harry Potter.

The tile distributions were just weird at this tourney. I had both blanks five times, but in three of those games, it was both at once, and thus less helpful. Two games really felt like I should win them and I came up short. I lost three of the four games where I bingoed three times. At least one I had no business winning, but I did.

Considering I hadn't studied in at least 6 months, this was fine. I am not improving at Scrabble. I still need to figure out how to better stay in games when I'm behind, and manage all the parts of strategy at once instead of ignoring half of them at any given time. Probably if I used more of my time, I might get better at this. I lost a bunch of games on Saturday that I might've been able to be closer in if I hadn't been fuzzy. Cree played both of the phoney bingos on me. Taste of my own medicine. I've only quackled four games, and so far missed a couple high prob bingos. I'm slowly regaining a desire to look at words, so maybe it'll get better.

i'll get back to 2012 at some point. short story is: got new job, focused all energy there, didn't care about scrabble much at all.

this coming year, i'm hoping to like it more. i also hope to be ready for nationals... will probably fly to one thing other than nationals. am optimistic about another nyc multiday. i still have no plans to go csw, especially since i barely have motivation to study owl right now. the thought of adding that many more words is nothing i can deal with as i keep figuring out this job.

january - NOLA
february - saratoga
march - Pkeepsie
april - webster? have to work during BAT
may - perhaps Portland. perhaps montreal
june - perhaps toronto
july - lipe's weekend thing, nationals
aug - greenwich?
sept - maybe a labor day thing.
oct - lake george
nov - probably nothing. work was crazy this nov
dec - who knows - maybe i'll be up for new years again

Thursday: left the house around 3:15am, layover in CVG. Arrived, Lila dropped me off at Tulane, had three hours' worth of meetings and lunches with Tulane med admissions folks. Walked from TUSM to the French Quarter, picking up a pair of shoes on the way because I packed badly. Rested briefly in our giant room, then Tim met his cousin and I took myself to Cafe Beignet. Met back up and went to dinner at Root with James, Lila and Tim. Quite good, bits of molecular gastronomy, bits of comfort food -- favorite course was the pork belly. Got back to the room, realized we'd been up for 20+ hours, and went to bed.

Friday: up at a reasonable hour, mediocre food at jagerhaus. Sat with Lila and worked out prizes. Scrabblers started to arrive in larger numbers. Rum distillery tour with lipe, eldeiry, evans, james, conrad. cab over to the WWII museum where we found jesse and koenig. Spent many hours at the American Sector, where Lila's daughter works. Much free food, many drinks, bacony cupcakes. Rum + Cab was bad idea, and I was too nauseous to eat much at Emeril's NOLA - I'll have to go back some time and appreciate it more properly. Made it out for a bit that night, at least, though i missed many of the highest highlights.

Saturday: Scrabble! i went 4-0 then 1-3. better than i had expected. Lunch was muffuletta in Jackson Square Park. Bliss. Dinner was Gumbo Shop -- genuine, comforting. Saw some parading. Many shenanigans, until late into the night, accompanied by lipe and broersma, two of the most shenanigan-intensive of my friends.

Sunday: Scrabble! i went 1-3 then 4-0. worse than i had expected. Lunch was delicious poboys at Killer PoBoys. Dinner was crazy ridiculous slabs of meat and many bottles of wine at Besh Steakhouse with a bunch of NASPA committee members. Went back to change out of my fancy dinner clothes and never made it back out of the hotel.

Monday: Scrabble! I went 3-1, but was trounced soundly in the loss from turn one, when I left a phony bingo on the board. None of my games were so close in the end, and my losses were big enough that a decent 13-6 record combined with a pathetic spread left me out of the money. So pleased to watch Jesse win again, and then wander off to Napoleon House for lunch and pimms cups for the second year in a row after tourney ended. Finally spent some time taking in the music of the town, with bluegrassy goodness and AMAZING cocktails at Three Muses, and jazz at the Spotted Cat (meow). Stopped back in on the increasingly drunken folk who were left in town (who sat in the same bar for about 9 hours -- that's dedication), then back to bed.

Tuesday: planes home, with a tasty order of fries at Varsity in the ATL airport.

This tournament is really about watching everyone have fun - my friends, the strangers, the musicians, the foodies. My favorite moments are the quiet ones. Listening to music at Cafe Beignet's courtyard, sitting on the grass in the square, walking around before the city wakes up, turning the corner from the loudest streets to the understated ones, closing the door after the tournament room has emptied. We hope to be back again next year.

this will be the second tournament i attend without playing in the past three months (sadly, this one doesn't come with amusement parks, but it will likely come with general amusement). there will be many people staying at my house - possibly more people than i can find blankets for given that half my stuff is still packed and in the attic (possibly indicating that i don't really need about half the stuff that i own). i'm most excited about a) company but also b) getting to cook tasty things and have people to share them with. tonight will be enchiladas with rice and beans and chips and salsa, and possibly brownies. tomorrow i think i'll make blueberry boy bait for breakfast, and then we'll all go out for dinner, and sunday probably scones. it's much better to make scones when other people are there to eat them, so that i don't eat the entire 2 sticks of butter and cup of heavy cream that they contain.

NYC 2012: food edition

Friday was the fanciest. Tim came to town, and we were joined by alex, wisemonkey, olaugh and spherulitic at Gramercy Tavern. Gramercy Tavern is a super fancy restaurant. 27/30 zagat. 2012 james beard best nyc chef. michelin star.

It started with hijinks, e.g., Alex not wearing pants, and having to borrow a pair from Tim that we had brought for Chris; me forgetting to tell Chris the dinner plan until getting there in time basically required that he sprint from 110th to 20th (with the assistance of the subway, at least). The amazing part of this restaurant was really how much they took all of our ridiculousness in stride, and never made me feel silly for things like dressing all of my friends in my husband's clothes, and asking to substitute parts of the tasting menu, and who knows what else we did that looked very odd.

In any case, our table went tasting menu. the omnivore version, with a couple changes for me:

Cocktail: Sparkling wine, Combier peach liqueur, angostura bitters

Amuse: most people had a scallop. i had some melon. stupid allergy.

Two glasses of Bordelet Authentique pear cider, 2011, from Normandy

Red Snapper with Kohlrabi, Shiitake Mushrooms and Smoked Jalapeño
Soft Shell Crab with Corn, Red Leaf Lettuce and Pickled Green Tomato
Halibut with Zucchini, Black Olives and Lobster Sauce
Squab with Barley, Sungold Tomatoes and Artichokes
Pork Loin & Belly with Flageolet Beans, Hakurei Turnips and Pickled Carrots (the actual choice from the tasting was veal, but they let me substitute).

Dessert 1: Fennel Cookie with Handmade Ricotta and Raspberries
Dessert 2: Nectarine Tarte Tatin with Bourbon Crème Anglaise and Butter Pecan Ice Cream
Dessert 3: lemon curd filled chocolate bonbon, strawberry macaron, peanut butter cup thingie, almond brittle, chocolate mint truffle, and one more thing that i don't remember any more.

The pacing of the food, combined with the sizes of the servings and the bread with salty butter, was perfect. There were a couple of small things I didn't like as much here and there (like the artichoke with the squab - the flavor/texture didn't seem that harmonious), but there were also things that were amazing (the halibut, the pork belly, the tarte). Plus, the attitude was comfortable, accessible - not at all stuffy (except for the sedate matching clothes all the wait staff had to wear). they brought some 1998 beer at the end for cecilia and tim to pair with their cheese plates. oldest beer we've ever had, and it was pretty amazing - deep flavors, smooth, highly alcoholic.

  • and now i'm home. Tim left for NH already, but he left me a cupcake in the fridge, and i made some soy sauce and sugar hot dogs with rice. i have to get motivated to work some of this off via exercise, but at least i walked (and sweated) a bit this weekend to make up for some of it.

so, that was pretty unsuccessful scrabble. I whiffed on a bunch of bingoes, and let Kurt play TOUPEED#! How many times do I have to see obvious (or at least well-known) phoneys before I know for sure they're fake?!

game 1 vs Popper
game 2 vs Sam
game 3 vs Jason
game 4 vs Mitchell
game 5 vs Kurt
game 6 vs Kurt

clearly, livejournal is a dead medium. the Scandal is everywhere except here, and yet i persist in posting.

so, i went to nationals and i had a great time. i didn't have the stamina or mental energy to try to play games. the new job is hard, moving is hard, selling a house is hard, i wasn't ready for scrabble is hard on top of all of that.

i'm glad that i went. i didn't miss playing at all, which surprised me.

i decided that doing commentary is mind numbingly boring, for the most part. everything starts to look the same. none of the words look like words any more. i was looking every word up to make sure i wasn't screwing up and reporting phoneys when they weren't phony. i know SHILINGI from studying, but i see it on the board with blank S and it looks like nothing at all. also, it's hard to catch interesting stuff unless you basically wander around for at least 20-30 minutes, and doing that every game is much more physically tiring than sitting still at a board 7 games a day. i don't envy Sherrie for doing this for 31 games in a row.

any feedback on my commentary, though, if i do end up doing that again at some event?

that said, it would be much more efficient and probably more interesting to hire one or two or three players to do on the ground twitter/tumblr updates rather than this walk around with a notepad, type into computer with weird link notation, wait for john to upload, then have to go back and fix things and have him reupload, etc. and set up a twitter account for the event and stick it at a station and let players post to it. or do something that gives more players an outlet to update for themselves in a recognized way. or at least make it possible by enabling wifi access for some number of those who are willing to do updates. i think we need to put conrad or someone else who's making good headway in the social media scene on the championship committee.

the social energy of this tournament also felt off to me, but maybe there are just too many factions at this point to navigate  comfortably. and more of us are now in contention for actually winning at any given time, so less prone to do the kind of stupid stuff we did years ago as a larger collective.

but there were food highlights! pio pio and hawkers asian street fare and even the overpriced tchoup chop in the resort were quite pleasing. and harry potter was definitely worth seeing, and i'm glad i got to spend a couple of hours on a couple of different days in the park. i do wish i had the energy for disney, but it'll probably be more fun to go with my nephews at some point anyway.

i'll be playing for vegas. i'm looking forward to new york city. i'll do commentary or annotate or something at can am, i guess. who knows what else i'll do this year. i'll figure out how to balance work with play, though, so that i'll be ready to compete at nationals a year from now. and i'll keep trying to figure out how to make more female d1 players.

next weekend

friday: arrive, find cecilia and eric, go to hotel, drop stuff, go to harry potter, eat something, find jesse's roto thing, socialize, find somewhere to sleep

saturday: go to harry potter, come back, watch some scrabble, eat dinner with advisory board (do not wander off and be chided by advisory board), things and stuff

sunday: maybe disney, maybe tourney. fret about not playing scrabble. eat free apps at tourney director reception.

monday: go home. be sad about leaving.

don't forget to pack: sunblock, whatever robin sent me in the mail, phone charger, new orleans fliers, rack, score sheets, hat if i can find one, a few clothes, bottle opener.

oh, also: if anyone wants to vent, feel free to vent at me. i have no game to have to be worried about, so i'm happy to try to absorb all of your angst.

i never did post anything about the scrabble at albany... it was lackluster on my part. the last day, i made some mistakes, but i also had way too many hard racks and way too much distraction from getting the call the day before with a promotion at work. so it goes.

i did go through a couple games

http://cross-tables.com/annotated.php?u=11689 - the kid is good
http://cross-tables.com/annotated.php?u=11690#0# - highly frustrating almost final game

my scrabble dance card has gotten surprisingly full, but i'm not actually playing in two upcoming scrabblish events:

- connecticut, because why not. it's so close by.
- nationals - i'll be there friday thru sunday. will try to help out a bit. debating whether or not to take myself to disney for a day
- perhaps judy cole's one-day.
- labor day nyc
- jason's one day
- can-am - just hanging out. annotating, hopefully.

october... maybe lake george, maybe not. we'll see how work is going. may also go to toronto on a food-cation instead.
november - nothing planned
december - sleep for a week
january - new orleans. it's time to give up on new years.
